ActivArmor has appointed Dr. Peter F. Armstrong, MD, FRCSC, FAOA, FACS, FAAP, to its Medical Advisory Board. He joins ActivArmor’s medical advisors, whose profiles are listed on the ActivArmor Medical Advisors Page.
His appointment adds decades of pediatric orthopaedic, healthcare, education, quality, safety, and value leadership to ActivArmor’s work with clinicians, healthcare partners, and distribution organizations.
A Career in Pediatric Orthopaedics and Healthcare Leadership
Dr. Armstrong received his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario in 1972 and served in the Canadian Armed Forces in West Germany from 1973 to 1976. He completed his orthopaedic residency at the University of Toronto, followed by a pediatric orthopaedic fellowship with Dr. Robert Salter at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
Following his fellowship, Dr. Armstrong joined the orthopaedic staff at The Hospital for Sick Children in 1982 and spent his first two years conducting orthopaedic research at the University of Pennsylvania.
In 1991, he became Chief of Staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children Intermountain in Salt Lake City and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Utah. In 2000, he became Chief Medical Officer of the 22 Shriners Hospitals and moved to the organization’s headquarters in Tampa. At the end of June 2012, he became Chief Medical Officer Emeritus.
From January 2013 through the end of March 2021, Dr. Armstrong served as Chief Medical Officer for OrthoPediatrics, an orthopaedic device company focused on children and adolescents.
Advancing Pediatric Orthopaedic Education
Dr. Armstrong is passionate about pediatric orthopaedic education and improving care for children with orthopaedic conditions. He founded the Foundation for Advancing Pediatric Orthopaedics in 2018 and served as its President and Chairman of the Board until 2023.
The Foundation’s Board later decided to rename the organization the “Armstrong Children’s Orthopaedic Alliance.”
Recognized for Quality, Safety, and Value
Dr. Armstrong was honored in 2022 by the British Society for Children’s Orthopaedic Surgery, BSCOS, as its first Honorary Overseas Member and was presented with the John Sharrard Memorial Medal.
In May 2023, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. He was also selected as the 2024 L. Andrew Koman, MD Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist by the Southern Orthopaedic Association.
The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America has renamed the POSNA QSVI Award the POSNA Peter Armstrong QSVI Award in recognition of his being a champion for quality, safety, and value initiatives throughout his career at SickKids, Shriners Children’s, as Chief Medical Officer for POSNA’s industry partner OrthoPediatrics, and in retirement.
