ActivArmor Supports Athlete’s Lifestyle After Injury

ActivArmor Athlete: Kylee Menszak

13-year-old student athlete Kylee Menszak broke her wrist in gym class. Normally, this injury would make Kylee ineligible for her soccer season if she was placed in a traditional plaster cast that is deemed dangerous to players. Thanks to St Luke’s Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon Dustin Green Greenhill, MD, she didn’t have to miss her season. Kylee was able to continue playing soccer after Dr. Greenhill placed her in an ActivArmor 3D printed custom sport cast.

ActivArmor helps athletes like Kylee protect their broken wrists on and off the field, but can also be sanitized or even removed after post-game celebrations to wash off the sweat and dirt from playing soccer. For athletes especially, being able to clean underneath the cast, keeps the skin from itching or breaking down, unlike plaster or fiberglass casts.

St. Luke’s University Health Network was the first healthcare organization in Pennsylvania to offer ActivArmo’s revolutionary technology to patients, rendering traditional casts obsolete in time. “The ActivArmor cast is a good option for athletes with a stable fracture. Knowing when a child’s fracture is stable and healing acceptably versus unstable and requires more attention (or even surgery) is one of the special skill sets of a pediatric orthopedic surgeon,” described Dr. Greenhill.

Athletes need to be very mobile while still immobilized. Athletes need to be able to do all the sports movements that they need to do to help them be successful in their sport. But they also need to be accurately immobilized to make sure that they’re protected while they heal. ActivArmor gives athletes like Kylee the freedom necessary to maintain their active lifestyle by offering a sleek, waterproof 3D printed cast designed custom for each individual athlete.

Kylee’s mom, Megan recounts her experience with her daughter's recovery using ActivArmor as “fantastic” and shared that “hopefully this is the last time her daughter will need to wear a cast”, but her two sons are athletes and should one ever need a cast, she would want it to be ActivArmor.
